Working from home - remote collaboration tools

Microsoft Teams vs Zoom vs Slack

Due to COVID19, many people around the globe are now working from home. Although working from home was an increasing trend, the global virus epidemic has pushed most employers to allow their staff to work from home.

In this article, we explore the most popular work – collaboration tools.

What is Zoom?

Zoom provides a remote conferencing service that combines video conferencing, online meetings, chat, and mobile collaboration.

Zoom offers

  • Video Webinar
  • Group Collaboration
  • Cloud and local recording
  • Integrated Scheduling
  • Premium Audio

Zoom is a great video-conferencing tool, however it does lack the ability to File share, set up specific Team collaboration .

What is Microsoft Teams?

Microsoft Teams is a hub for teamwork in Office 365. It looks similar in look and feel to Slack. However, under the surface there's plenty of features and functionality to set the platforms apart. Microsoft’s all-encompassing workstream collaboration plus unified communications platform – combining meetings, chats, calls, and file sharing with the Office 365 application stack to bring everyone together in a shared workspace.

What is Slack?

Like Teams, Slack is a hub for teamwork. Instead of a single overstuffed inbox, conversations in Slack happen in dedicated spaces called channels. Slack makes it simple to follow conversations or find important information in an easily searchable archive.

 Our Veredict

We have decided not to include Zoom in our veredict, since this is a video-conferencing specific app, which lacks collaboration tools unlike Teams and Slack.

Slack is a solid chat tool that works across a variety of platforms, with a very low barrier for entry: new users can be invited via email, and can use web-based, desktop, or mobile versions of the application. If you are looking for an application that does internal based communication and would like to minimise "Email tennis", this is the program of choice.

We did find that the Slack app on both Mac and Windows uses an alarmingly high amount of system resources (CPU).

Microsoft Teams, whilst slightly more challenging to set up initially, it offers a more rewarding workflow. Microsoft Teams includes a robust chat service that allows users to communicate quickly without setting up a conference. Syncing with Office 365 also makes collaboration easy by allowing file sharing and calendar support. Microsoft’s feature set is focused around perfecting internal communication. Microsoft Teams also offers the ability to invite "outsiders" (people outside your domain), to collaborate and share files with a specific Team.

Our weapon of choice is Microsoft Teams.
